Wrestling and Religion: We Know It’s Fake and We Don’t Care

EXCERPT: [...] Professional wrestling, much like organized religion, operates within its own system of internal logic and rules. To the uninitiated outsider, the inability of a wrestler to prevent himself from bouncing off of the ropes (perhaps gravity operates differently within the squared circle) or a suplex inflicting damage only on an opponent despite both bodies slamming into the mat, might appear as strange as, say, walking in on the ceremony of holy communion (without the chair shots, of course) with no understanding of the purpose or meaning behind the ritual. Max Landis points out that the bizarre internal logic of the sport is incidental to fans because, ultimately, wrestling isn’t about wrestling—it’s about constructing mythology and meaning. We know it’s fake, and we really don’t care. The often strange and peculiar logic of religion serves the same function, I’d argue, and the catcalls of unbelievers—“You know it’s fake, right?”—miss the point entirely....

Good analogy. They both use bells and fake blood too! lol!

Ofcourse there's something to being raised as a kid to enjoy professional wrestling. My brother and I always rooted for Wahoo McDaniels and hated the Spoiler. It was the mythic struggle of good vs evil. Saturday night watching wresting. Then Sunday morning learning about Jacob's wrestling match with an angel in Sunday school. Life made so much more sense back then. lol!

When I shuffle off my mortal coil, I want my funeral service to be in a nice church with candles, and hymns.
Am I being unscientific?

I wouldn't say so, however I would consider that what you perceive as a spiritual closure for family etc is only an option because of how long standing such methods are applied in a traditional sense and common to our country.  It becomes therefore awkward to consider or even suggest anything that falls out of place with the de-facto.

I did consider some rather outrageous was of dealing with my own send off, something of a cross between a Viking Sea burial (minus the poisoned slave girl virgin) and a firework display, where the big bang would actually be my carcass at the top of a mast.  (That's probably too visual)

Was the consideration because of some spiritualistic reasoning in my case?

No.  I just reasoned that I have had enough taken from me in this life so I didn't want to leave anything behind for people to pick through the bones of (so to speak), I wouldn't agree with my organs being harvested or my physiology being used in some warped science experiment.  Although the consideration might put you off fish if it ever got the go ahead.

Being in the Navy once, I get a free burial at sea. Problem is, no relatives can be present on the ship. I guess they could stand on a pier with binoculars: "There he goes! Splash!" lol!
