The irony

Nice.
Read up on the cardinal. Apparently one in captivity lived to 28+ years. Same article went on to say 3 years in wild but some individuals have made it to 12-15.

Amazing how much predation affects lifespans of creatures below those higher on top predator list.

That's just the lifespan of its adult reproductive form.

Mayflies live several years before that in an immature aquatic form called a 'nymph'. It's just that when the nymphs reach the end of the line, they molt into a sexual reproductive winged form that emerges from the water, sets off on its first and last flight, mates, lays eggs and dies.

Hopefully they enjoy that last day.

Wow, learn to fly and lose your virginity all on the same day. Many would die happy.

Up here we have the shad fly. Winged green aviators that emerge from the swamps to participate in one of the largest orgies of the insect world. For a few days in Spring, sex is all that they care about. They cover the walls of buildings like a thick tapestry and if you left a window open then get out the vacuum cleaner. Birds gorge themselves, dining at a leisurely pace  since food is so plentiful. With no mouth to speak of, these bugs aren't here at this stage in life to dine.

Sounds like lovebugs in Florida. They actually fly around while mating. Some seasons they're so plentiful that people put mesh screens over their car radiators so they don't get jammed with them.

was watching a doco and they said that they were unsure how long the Marine Iguana lived for and it could possibly be hundreds of years old.
comments made were that the iguanas in the doco could have watched Captain Cook & Darwin row ashore etc...
they said something to the efect they were not 100% sure on what to base the age on and thought maybe they could have been using the wrong anatomical atribute.
and in so doing pondered if some could be between 400 to 600 years old & that it would not be unreasonable to expect some of them would be old enough to have watched Darwin & Cook etc...
