We live in a rigourously car-centric society. Our cities are formed around it. Our bodies are shaped for it. And most of us are devotees to the cult of the car. Besides the TV and Internet, the car is the single most influential piece of technology on our lives as a whole. It defines our notions of space, time, class, and even personal identity. It is a physical and psychosocial prosthetic extention of ourselves into our world. View and discuss:

Horses once enjoyed an equinocentrism from humans that endured for centuries, which was then almost abruptly wiped out. It makes me wonder what it would take to knock the automobile off its pedestal (granting that even the long-time prophecy of a popular and mass-produced "flying car" would arguably still be lending continuity to the general concept of "car").

“The car, is the other connection to the outside world, but to be precise it connects the inhabitants to the inside of the car, not to the outside world per se. The outside world is only an element for moving through, as submarines move through water.”

“You can't take highways during the apocalypse, because they'll be packed with panicky people.”

“I think that cars today are almost the exact equivalent of the great Gothic cathedrals; I mean the supreme creation of an era, conceived with passion by unknown artists, and consumed in image if not in usage by a whole population which appropriates them as a purely magical object.”
― Roland Barthes, Mythologies
