Slovakian Prime Minister Shot

The Prime Minister of Slovakia (the eastern half of former Czechoslovakia and now a NATO and EU member) was shot multiple times by a shooter in the crowd at a political event. The government has clamped down a news embargo, but all kinds of rumors are swirling.

The shooter pulled out a pistol and reportedly got off five shots. Then the PM's security detail tackled him and he's in custody. No news about his identity or motive has been released. It isn't clear that all five shots hit the PM, but there's no indication anyone else was hit.

People on the scene describe an arm wound, maybe (this isn't certain) a head wound, and several shots to the stomach area. The security men shoved the PM into a black sedan and sped off. Due to the gravity of the PM's wounds, they called in a medevac helicopter that delivered him to a hospital.

Best indications are that the PM immediately went into surgery which has lasted several hours. The Defense Minister says that the PM is in critical condition, the surgeons are struggling to stabilize him, and they won't know for a couple of days whether he will survive. But other officials say he's out of danger. Given the news blackout, there's nothing official.
