EXCERPTS: Omicron, the highly contagious coronavirus variant sweeping across the country, is driving the daily American death toll higher than during last fall’s delta wave, with deaths likely to keep rising for days or even weeks. [...] “Omicron will push us over a million deaths,” said Andrew Noymer, a public health professor at the University of California, Irvine...

[...] The average daily death toll is now at the same level as last February, when the country was slowly coming off its all-time high of 3,300 a day. More Americans are taking precautionary measures against the virus than before the omicron surge, according to a AP-NORC poll this week ... Omicron symptoms are often milder, and some infected people show none, researchers agree. But like the flu, it can be deadly, especially for people who are older, have other health problems or who are unvaccinated... (MORE - missing details)

INTRO: We’ve learned a lot about COVID-19 by examining what we’ve flushed down the toilet. Here are a few of those things.

The variant was in a waste sample collected in Merced County on Nov. 25 — that’s a day before the World Health Organization named it omicron.

Scientists in New York found it in a sample collected even earlier, on Nov. 21, predating the alarms from leaders in South Africa about a troubling new variant. Officials in Texas also detected omicron early through wastewater surveillance.

A new report last week from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention outlined these facts.

Agency scientists describe this as “strong early evidence that the Omicron variant was likely present or more widely distributed in these communities than originally indicated by clinical testing alone.”

The report makes a case that by the time officials have detected a new variant, it likely has spread to numerous other countries.

In this light, travel bans look ineffective and like “closing the barn door after the horses have fled,” as researchers from the University of Illinois argued in a recent op-ed. Requiring testing on international flights would be a much more effective policy, they wrote.

The study also underscores the potency of this new surveillance tool, which counties increasingly rely on as demand for COVID-19 tests outpace supply... (MORE - missing details)
