Did Social Media Habits Contribute to Woman’s Death? - Zinjanthropos - Jan 17, 2021

21 year old, solo hiking in dangerous BC terrain calls boyfriend instead of 911. It sounds as if she did more than just that wrong and she paid the ultimate price.

Yes, she should have dialed 911, but I don’t think social media was a contributing factor. There’s obviously more risk involved with solo-hiking.

If this caricature did happen to fit her, especially at the time, then it could have been a contributor, but she still might have died anyway (other factors):

“We do encounter that fairly frequently where people who get lost, or are in trouble, their first phone call is to a family member and they use up their cell phone batteries texting and talking to friends and family instead of phoning 911 and getting us going faster," he said.

Though she had a passion for the outdoors (was familiar with the real world rather than the online one), we've all seen those people who are constantly on their mobile devices, even when surrounded by company, semi-distracted from immediate, developing events. So habits could have strangely dominated (i.e., she wasn't usually texting/chatting with the police and sending updates, uploading images/videos, to the police station).

I saw that too. She’s not the only lost hiker that’s called family or ran cell phone battery down. The other question is why she travelled in the first place, with COVID happening. Hate to say it but she didn’t recognize any dangers involved until too late and thus gained membership to the exclusive Darwin Awards recipients club. Did her social media habits/thinking corrode or eliminate altogether the survival instinct?

Did I just imagine SSomeone posting something about the girl being a worthy candidate for a Darwin Award?

Twas I.

From Wiki:  The criterion for the awards states: "In the spirit of, the Darwin Awards commemorate individuals who protect our gene pool by making the ultimate sacrifice of their own lives. Darwin Award winners eliminate themselves in an extraordinarily idiotic manner, thereby improving our species' chances of long-term survival."

Alone on a mountain by choice. It’s cold. Used up your phone cell battery to the point where you can only make one call and you call the boyfriend over 3000km away. Over-confident with disregard of the danger. I’ve heard she was not well equipped for mountaineering. Shouldn’t have happened unless victim played carelessly.

Sorry - another fail on the listening (generally following) front.

Well, if risk takers and adventure seekers make the cut, I might be added to that list some day. I do run into a lot of city boys while solo-hiking, though. Are there more men than women on the list? Looks that way. I wouldn't say that she's a Darwin Award winner, though. There's lots of benefits associated with hiking.

"However, there is a class of risk—the “idiotic” risk—that is qualitatively different from those associated with, say, contact sports or adventure pursuits such as parachuting. Idiotic risks are defined as senseless risks, where the apparent payoff is negligible or non-existent, and the outcome is often extremely negative and often final."

From the amount of times I’ve seen it declared, it’s pretty easy to be an idiot on the forum. Big Grin

Is climbing Mount Everest an idiotic risk? People do it all the time, many die but are not called idiots unless they went up there ill equipped. This woman was not equipped and rendered her one life line (phone) inoperable. IOW she went up there clueless and oblivious. Sounds harsh but that’s the reality of the situation. Idiots who end up dead serve one valuable purpose, a lesson for other potential idiots.

They said that she was not fully equipped to spend the night but there are plenty of day hikes. The hike to St. Mark's Summit is about a 5 hour rountrip. They didn’t say that her battery was dead. They said that she lost connection. She could have lost connection if and when she slipped.
