Hurricane Michael - Yazata - Oct 9, 2018

Another hurricane is brewing up in the Gulf of Mexico. This one just passed the western tip of Cuba today and is apparently headed towards the Florida panhandle. It's projected to hit between Panama City and Tallahassee (the state capital) as a category 2 or 3 hurricane on Wednesday. Then it will continue on as a tropical storm across Georgia into South Carolina and then North Carolina, threatening to drop more rain on those areas that are still recovering from flooding after Hurricane Florence. The FL Governor has already declared an emergency and called out the Florida National Guard. I believe that Trump will be declaring a Federal Disaster before it hits. There's a major US Air Force Base (Tyndall AFB) right where this is projected to come ashore, and they have announced the evacuation of all personnel assigned to the base. The base is where they train F-22 Raptor fighter pilots. These are high-value aircraft, so I'm guessing that they are being evacuated out of danger as well. (Or maybe they have really strong storm-resistant hangers or something.)

They are ordering mandatory evacuations of beachfront and low-lying areas around Panama City. Tallahassee (the state capital) is inland a way but is under hurricane warning too, and they expect major electrical power disruptions there.

More about aircraft evacuations here:

Tyndall's F-22's have apparently been moved to Wright Patterson AFB in OH. Tyndall's been entirely evacuated of all personnel. Eglin AFB, a huge complex to the west between Pensacola and Panama City that's home to a lot of USAF R&D, is being partially evacuated. It is home to F-35A's which have been moved to Barksdale AFB in LA. Hurlbert Field (part of the Eglin Complex) is home to Air Force Special Operations Forces. It's been evacuated of non-essential personnel, "AC-130J Ghostrider and AC-130U Spooky gunships, MC-130H Combat Talon IIs and PC-12s -- known as the U-28 reconaissance aircraft have been evacuated to Little Rock AFB in AR." There are also CV-22 Osprey VTOL aircraft at Hurlbert, but no word on whether they have been flown out or are hunkered down. The special forces troops are remaining at Hurlbert in case they are needed for rescue operations and they may need the Ospreys for that.

It looks like the strongest (category 4) winds in the eastern eyewall were right over Mexico Beach FL. Between 100-150 mph winds and storm surge off the ocean, the town (a tourist resort) was devastated. They had all been warned to evacuate, but some probably chose to stay behind. I wonder how many of them died.

RE: Hurricane Michael - Yazata - Oct 13, 2018

Reportedly every building at Tyndall AFB has been wrecked and rendered unusable. The base was just about ground zero for the hurricane.

All of the base hangers have been stripped of their roofs. Losses appear to include 3 F-22's that were undergoing maintenance and couldn't be flown out to safety.

I guess it more or less survived Thursday night (Oct 11-12)? Recent updates are scarce; this article was at least posted yesterday, and even it's about a phenomenon that had already become old stuff:

An old, local weather forecast below that's perhaps the last update MBO bothers with. Either they're powerless slash wiped-out or the event registered so little on their public consciousness that they're too disinterested to remark any further about post-Michael status. Sheeesh.

"A flash flood watch is in effect into Thursday evening and the Myrtle Beach area should expect showers, thunderstorms and wind into early Friday morning, according to the National Weather Service. A coastal flood advisory is also in effect until Thursday evening, the NWS reports."
