EXCERPT: [...] "He is thinking about it. He has a desire to return and we are doing everything we can to make it happen," [Anatoly] Kucherena said. "With a group of lawyers from other countries, we are working on the question of his return to America..."

I saw CitizenFour last weekend. A truly riveting documentation of the NSA leak scandal AS it was happening. What was really interesting was the paranoia that gripped Snowden even as they were filming. Peering out his hotel window in Japan. Checking the front desk by phone for any suspicious visitors. The anxiety of having the hotel fire alarm go off without notice. The ever present terror of having your door busted down at any given minute. After the scandal broke, the film catches up with Snowden a few months later after he has been living in Russia. He is noticeably diminished. Underneath his eyes are huge dark circles, symptomizing long nights of lying awake wondering what the hell is going to happen to him, what should he do next, or perhaps if it was all even worth it. Do Americans even care about their privacy being violated? Coming back to America to face his charges may bring some much needed closure to Snowden, even if it DOES mean serving some time. The man is nothing if not impeccably-principled and ethically-driven. Surely a court will see this in a trial.

Both Ghandi and Nelson Mandela were originally imprisoned. They might not have been for the same reason as what Snowden is wanted for, however the point is that both of those men served their prison time and eventually became iconic political figures.
