Quote:Brett Stones, who runs SeaMor Dolphin Watching Boat Trips, caught one live curled octopus on camera and photographed several others which had died.

“They were coming out of the water and crawling up the beach. We don’t quite know what’s causing it," Mr Stones told Wales Online.

Why aliens look like octupuses

At least The Independent has the plural of octopus spelled correctly.

Leaving it as trigger for inspiring side-effect: Any aliens would need a different spelling anyway, though not applicable in that typo's usage.

Here's a typo or misspelling (in title and url) that was even made when trying to address a supposed incorrect plural, but the latter is actually debatable or an accepted alternate ("octopi" affected as well):
Octupuses, not octupi

with the age of cameras on every phone & every person with a phone these types of things become documented & global when previousely they wouldbe a dinner table conversation & then dismissed.

RU.... I think that is a valid point. I remember when I first bought my mini iPad. Took it on a trip to BC and while on a ferry ride from the mainland to Victoria I used it to to record two pods of orca, several individual orca and many Dall's porpoises. I thought nothing of it until this elderly aboriginal fellow came up to me and said he's been riding the ferries for over 30 years and couldn't remember a trip quite like this one because normally they never see anything. Just luck some times. Ironically while in Victoria we went whale watching and never saw a whale. I still have the rain checks they handed us.

I went through life thinking it was 'octopi'.

Then a woman who knows more than me told me that 'octopus' is from the Greek, and 'octopi' is a Latin plural ending. Not right. So she said that 'octopuses' is correct.

Then I recently read somewhere that in Greek, the correct plural should technically be 'octopodes'. Oh well.

I guess that 'octopus' has become an official English language word (even if we borrowed it) and in English, it's 'octopuses'.

I've heard of whales stranding themselves in large groups, but not octopuses.

Some speculations as to why they did it are here:

http://www.walesonline.co.uk/news/wales-news/scientific-reasons-octopuses-invaded-welsh-13841394

They appeared after a high tide and may have been feeding close to shore and were caught on the beach as the tide receded. Except that these are a deeper water species of octopus.

Mysterious. Bottom line is that they just don't know.

Octopuses/Octopi

The English language is a bastardisation of many languages, therefore although Octopi might be seen as latin, it's still potentially correct in English due to the bastardisation. It's only incorrect of course in Greek Wink
