What do the stars beside our names mean and why does everybody just get two?

In the forums software there are different "groups" that define the elevation of a user. The forum has Banned, Guest, Awaiting Authentication, Registered Members, (Respected and Constrained), Moderators, Super Moderators and Administrators as groups.
Not all groups are in current use, however the stars can be replaced by an image stating the group a person is so that a custom user title doesn't hide their position.
(I think two stars was the default for Registered Members unless I messed with it while setting the forums up initially)

Since you never got to return to SF after the makeover, you missed out on the new features like trophy point stuff and like/dislike buttons and lord knows how many other incentive distractions I may have never cognised. I.e., these things aren't uncommon at a lot of forums.
