This is a serious business. The UK is a world-leader on research and innovation. Our expertise is based in part on the open nature of collaboration and British values that welcome scientists and professionals from across the world. Brexit will be tough enough on that ethos of collaboration; it will be even tougher if we get the negotiations wrong.

Our recent survey of members working in science and research showed a clear impact from Brexit already. 39 per cent told us that their jobs had become less secure; half said that the Brexit decision had impacted negatively on their organisation’s work; and 67 per cent were dissatisfied with government preparations for life outside the EU. These concerns are well founded. For example the inevitable relocation of the European Medicines Agency from the UK will put at risk around 1500 skilled jobs and will impact on speed of access to new drugs and the current £30bn life sciences export market....
