Options? - Zinjanthropos - May 5, 2017

As of tomorrow I will be at my summer cottage until Fall.  There will be the odd time I return home during the summer but only briefly. I have unlimited internet where I'm going but it is with a different service provider than I have at home here.  We use a Samsung laptop and an iPad during summer. I'm not the most computer savvy person there is so I have a couple questions.

1. Can I sign on to the forum with my current Username?
2. If I can't then how could I do it?

As long your other ISP doesn't ban parts of the internet or carry a grudge against MyBB boards, then it shouldn't be any different than accessing SV via a hospital's guest WiFi or logging on at a friend's or relative's residence (using their laptop / service).

Thanks CC. I've never tried it before using another PC/ISP, always hesitant. I'll give it a shot once I get internet up and going.

Sod's law strikes again? Apparently the one internet provider in Canada that blocks access to SciVillage. Or the alternate laptop / ipad harbor some covert animus like "A Thing About Machines".

Ah, there's still hope in the late round, then. If not already installed / dormant at the cottage, then the problem could just be the weeks it will take for the service crew to finally get around. Wink

any isp that blocks message boards should not be recieving your money.
they are best left to their isis buddies to pay for their fanatic agendas.

locating the encryption "key" printed on the router sticker is the most difficult thing with modern computer device networking(logging on to a wifi network)

"scan for network, type in encryption password" and your all done assuming you have not got some odd ball or super duper firewall settings/software running.

Home temporarily. Could not log in using cellphone or iPad from the cottage. I've just reset and changed my password so I'll give it another go from the cottage when I return in a couple days.

Should this be a rented cottage belonging to a recreational properties enterprise or resort, and the internet access comes from their guest Wi-Fi extended over the whole area... Then it probably is blocked or limited or even constrained by some mediating proxy / VPN that either security obstructs or messes with personal data (like passwords) and location. Kind of like getting online at a superstore such as Walmart and discovering you can't visit a competitor or most any other website because they keep you confined to what pertains to their own online services.

No, it's ours. I actually have Bell fibre. Someone years ago decided to have it wired in and never used it. I have unlimited internet so no problems there. I think what I may have done wrong is this, on my home PC I bookmark the opening page so I don't have to log in. Perhaps I will have to log out before I head out again. Anyways I'll try that. The one thing I wish the Password Reset  wouldn't do, is to give me a temporary that contains either a 0 or a capital O although it is obvious the O is wider than the zero on my PC. Also capital I's sometimes look like lower case L's (l). Just eliminate those hard to read numbers/letters for starters. Then when you have to type what's in the captions or security code they don't tell you if the space between words is to be included (turns out it is, at least I did it here and it worked). Also when the request is made for the code there is no indication as to whether you still need to type in your Username and Password. Anyways when you're trying to hit a cell phone or iPad keyboard with your fingertips late at night while tired, sometimes things don't work out. I'll give it another go when I get back there Thursday.

Just testing to see if I could log in from the cottage. Looks like a success. I think the same guy who developed log in protocol also assisted in the design of North Korean test missiles. So much failure followed by the odd success

It took me weeks to log in after logging out. I think there's a catch like only robots would try to prove they aren't robots. Something like that.
