Sometimes I wonder if writers like Gibson, Daniel F. Galouye, PDK, and Clarke influence / shape the future as much as roughly anticipate it.

It's down to how the imagination is captivated by people, who then take what they have been influenced by an try to emulate it in their lives. Sometimes this can mean a complete recreation of something which was fictional, sometimes it's actually how it can be reapplied to a completely different problem. In any sense it's just characteristic of how we adapt what we learn from and use in our day to day survival. (How many times might you quote from a film or book? or ask what someone you might respect would do in a given situation etc)
