"Santa Sangre" - "Viy" - and so forth films (Halloween cinema hobbies thread) - C C - Oct 9, 2026
Wow. It is a highly rated horror film, BTW, even though it also looks like a psychonaut trip through a David Lynch movie or something. On TUBI TV and maybe others, and it's a restored version. Not the faded colors and low resolution in the trailer. Santa Sangre was released in 1989.

Must see this! I saw El Topo and The Holy Mountain quite a while ago. His movies are always a hoot!

Viy is a fairly accurate 1967 adaptation of the 1835 story written by Nikolai Gogol. It only resembles a Hammer film, so don't forget to turn the English subtitles on. Arguably more of a dark fairy tale than a horror flick, though it qualifies for that at the end. It's available on Tubi TV and at least two channels on YouTube. Somebody dubbed the 2nd [original] trailer below in English, so don't be fooled by that, either. The characters speak in Russian.
INTRO: Bursting with startling imagery and stunning practical effects courtesy of directors Konstantin Yershov, Georgi Kropachyov, and perhaps most notably, artistic director Aleksandr Ptushko (the legendary special effects artist whose spectacular stop-motion effects and innovative colour cinematography has seen him referred to as the Soviet equivalent of Willis O’Brien, Ray Harryhausen, and even Mario Bava), VIY has influenced generations of directors for more than half a century.
In 19th century Russia, a seminary student is forced to spend three nights with the corpse of a beautiful young witch. But when she rises from the dead to seduce him, it will summon a nightmare of fear, desire, and the ultimate demonic mayhem.
