It has nothing to do with how much they know. It has nothing to do with how fast they think. It is something much simpler and far more rare. Their quality is that they don't react. Not because they don't feel, not because they're detached or cold or operating from some elevated place above ordinary human experience but because somewhere between what happens to them and what they do about it, there is a pause and in that pause leaves everything. Victor Frankel, psychiatrist and holocaust survivor, a man who watched everything he loved be systematically destroyed wrote from inside a concentration camp that between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom. Neuroscientists now have a name for that space. They call it the prefrontal window. The gap between the activation of the amygdala, the brain's threatened detection system and the engagement of the prefrontal cortex where conscious choice lives. When your nervous system is regulated, when you are grounded in yourself, that window is wide enough to actually choose. When you're dysregulated, when the old wound has been touched, when the identity feels threatened, that window collapses to almost nothing and the reflex takes over. Here's what that means in practice. A person can have extraordinary intelligence can understand psychology, neuroscience, their own patterns, their own history, and in the moment of activation the trigger fires, all of it becomes inaccessible. Because intelligence require access to the prefrontal cortex and stress threat and dysregulation redirect blood flow away from it toward the survival brain in milliseconds. That's why the most intelligent response to most situations isn't a thought. It's a quality of attention. The capacity to be present enough that the gap stays open long enough for something chosen to emerge rather than something automatic. Flow states those moments of peak performance that athletes, musicians and artists describe as the clearest thinking they've ever done are characterized by exactly this. The thinking mind steps back and presence steps forward. And what emerges is more intelligent than anything the analytical mind could have produced under pressure. This is what the most conscious people have developed. Not the absence of feeling but a nervous system enough that the feeling doesn't hijack the function. Not the absence of reaction but enough inner space that the reaction becomes response. That gap is where your real intelligence lives. |
