INTRO: Lucian (Luke) Gideon Conway, III is Professor of Psychology at Grove City College. Luke was one of the first academics to break through social psychology's denial of the existence of left-wing authoritarianism. His most recent book is Liberal Bullies. This essay originally appeared him on his Substack, The Apologetic Professor. It was posted before Fauci advisor, David Morens, plead guilty to engaging in a conspiracy to conceal Covid-related records.
EXCERPT: It was at a Faculty Senate meeting almost five years ago at the University of Montana, my former employer. To be clear, I have no ill will towards my former colleagues. I did not leave on bad terms with faculty in my department; I still have good relations with people at UM. I don’t intend this to be a hit piece on everyone at the university. Indeed, for the 18 years I was a professor at UM, we laughed, argued in good faith, and mostly got along just fine.
But that day at a Faculty Senate Meeting, I was called a conspiracy theorist for citing studies run by Ivy League researchers. That day, I became convinced that progressive academia had become more like a cult than a science. To understand that moment requires understanding the slow death of science at my former university. That fateful Faculty Senate meeting was just the proverbial final nail in the coffin. It is, I admit, tempting to point to Dr. Fauci’s recent refusal to defend his science by invoking the 5th amendment — and the corresponding truth confessions in his diaries that I suspect he is trying to avoid — as evidence of how right I was back then. But I don’t need Dr. Fauci’s cowardice or his diaries to prove how right I was. In fact, all I need is data; the same data that were available back then, to everyone.
