Iran War News - Yazata - Jul 17, 2026

After Iran started firing on ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz, the US restarted the naval blockade of Iranian ports and began nightly attacks on Iranian port cities. This has been continuing for days.

Air strikes are continuing along the Iranian coast as I write this. There are indications that the US has not only been hitting port facilities, but has also been striking road and rail links between Iran's major port of Shah Bahar and the rest of the country.

Iran is boasting that they targeted an American warship with cruise missiles in what Iran calls "operation thunderbolt". There is no indication that any of the missiles struck the ship, believed to be a replenishment ship, but Iran is claiming victory since the ship reacted by moving further away.

American aircraft movements tell a mixed story. It appears that all American F-22 fighters, the world's most advanced stealth fighters, have been withdrawn and returned to the US. These are aircraft optimized for air-to-air combat against technologically advanced opponents, and they might have been withdrawn because Iran's air force and air defenses are decimated. I believe that all of the B-52's formerly at RAF Fairford in England have returned to the United States as well. There are still B-1's at Fairford.

But the US appears to be building up its aerial refueling capacity in Israel, with some 60 refueling tankers in Israel, about 30 of them at Ben Gurion international airport outside Tel Aviv. More air tankers appear to be on the way. Israel is saying that while they appreciate the American support, Ben Gurion airport is getting clogged and civilian air traffic is impacted. The US says that they prefer Ben Gurion over some of the other Israeli air bases they've been using like Ovda in the Negev desert to the south, because Tel Aviv is under a stronger missile defense shield meant to protect the city from missile attack.

Most of the Iranian fire is directed at Kuwait and Bahrain. From the looks of it, Iran is no longer just targeting military facilities and has broadened out to attacking oil industry, electricity and water desalinization targets. The attacks on Kuwait started two large fires, at least one of which was at a petrochemical facility.

Kuwait's army says (translation from Arabic)

Statement No. (76)

The Official Spokesman for the Ministry of Defense, Major General Saud Abdulaziz Al-Atwan,

stated that the Armed Forces have detected, since dawn today, hostile ballistic missiles and drones within Kuwaiti airspace, which have been intercepted and dealt with.

He added that the heinous Iranian aggression continued to target a number of military and security facilities, alongside several vital and civilian facilities in the country, as the attacks struck installations affiliated with the oil, electricity, and water sectors, leading to outbreaks of fires and causing severe damage to a number of facilities and installations.

He pointed out that the competent authorities have initiated firefighting and repair operations, resulting in injuries to a number of public fire force personnel and workers in the oil sector while carrying out their duties, and they are receiving the necessary medical care and treatment.

The interception operations of the hostile attacks also resulted in debris falling in a number of locations and residential areas, causing material damage, with no human injuries recorded, praise be to God.

The Armed Forces affirm their continued execution of their missions and duties with high efficiency, within the framework of ongoing readiness and permanent preparedness, and the taking of all necessary measures to protect the sovereignty of the homeland, preserve its security and stability, in coordination with the competent authorities, in a manner that safeguards the safety of citizens and residents.

And this potentially lurking ahead at the opposite end to the Suez Canal...

Putting another major dent into global supply lines
https://www.yahoo.com/news/world/articles/iran-instructs-houthis-prepare-red-154551470.html

Iran has instructed Yemen's Houthi movement to stand ready to close the Bab el-Mandeb strait, the vital gateway to the Red Sea, if the United States follows through on threats to strike Iranian power infrastructure. According to senior Iranian ‌sources, the Islamic Republic's leadership has discussed the idea with Iran's Houthi allies, with the rebel forces now awaiting definitive orders to begin targeting maritime traffic.

Unconfirmed reports that F-15E's from the USAF 48th Figher Wing from RAF Lakenheath are taking off and heading somewhere.

Germany has raised its alert level to the highest level. The interior minister warns that attacks on infrastructure, institutions and individuals could happen at any time.

Given the American warning and now this, I'm really getting the feeling that something is happening.

Air strikes are underway as I write this. So far, they don't sound much different than what we've seen on previous nights. With a few exceptions, all of the strikes appear to be on the Iranian coast, with an emphasis on the coast of the Strait of Hormuz. I was expecting a dramatically increased target list, but we haven't seen that so far.

We are seeing more emphasis on hitting roads, railroads and bridges, not nationwide so as to collapse the economy, but just those leading to and from Bandar Abbas, Iran's largest port city located right on the Strait of Hormuz.
