Front wheel drive, FWD has a driveshaft going to each front wheel from a differential inside the transmission.
Rear wheel drive, RWD, usually has a single driveshaft going back to the center of the rear to a differential where power is then sent to each wheel by individual shafts. Usually means it applies on cars with front engines.
All wheel drive, AWD, has both front wheel drive and rear wheel drive systems like above operating at the same time.
Four wheel drive, 4WD, is AWD but with two axles. Some 4WDs can lock the differential for use in slippery conditions.
