EXCERPTS: The fatal shooting of professor Nuno Loureiro of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has prompted an outpouring of grief from the scientific community and renewed attention on his scientific legacy.

Loureiro, a leading plasma physicist and director of MIT’s Plasma Science and Fusion Center, was known for research tied to fusion energy and astrophysical plasma dynamics.

[...] In January this year, Loureiro was among 11 MIT faculty members awarded the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers, one of the U.S. government’s highest honors for early-career researchers, recognizing his work on magnetic fields and plasma physics.

[...] As director of MIT’s Plasma Science and Fusion Center, Loureiro oversaw research programs aimed at improving the scientific understanding needed for future fusion energy systems.

In June this year, he was quoted in an MIT announcement about a new facility designed to accelerate fusion research, describing it as an effort to address “the most complex fusion technology challenges” tied to the global energy transition.

[...] Authorities have released limited information as the investigation into Loureiro’s death remains ongoing. Investigators have confirmed the case is being treated as a homicide, but as of Tuesday evening, no suspect had been taken into custody and officials have not released details about a possible motive... While nobody is saying anything publicly on the record, there are lots of rumors swirling that the Brown University shooting and the MIT professor murder might be related.

TV is reporting (based on "sources") that police have ID'd the Brown U. shooter and have obtained an arrest warrant. So now they are trying to locate that individual. And talk is that what broke that case open might have been evidence obtained at the MIT shooting.

Update: They appear to have located the individual in Salem NH. Police have surrounded a warehouse style building there.

Update: The building is one of those storage warehouses. The reason the police are in NH is that a car associated with the person they are looking for was located near the storage building. They don't seem to be 100% sure that their guy is in the warehouse, he may have switched cars there.

I had read that they had DNA from the suspect, but I had doubts about them finding that at the university shooting. Would make more sense if they found it at the MIT murder. No idea how they linked the two... other than desperation to smooth over their incompetence with the Brown shooting.

"Sources" are saying that video in the storage warehouse shows that their guy entered a storage locker. Police aren't sure if he ever left. They are clearing the warehouse to make sure nobody else is there. Then they will try to make entry into the storage locker. They sound concerned about the possibility that it might be booby-trapped with explosives.

Reports are coming in that the suspect has been found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound inside his storage locker

The dead Brown University suspect has been identified as Claudio Neves Valente, a Portuguese national who had a foreign resident 'green card' here in the United States. He reportedly was a physics graduate student at Brown 2000-2001 and spent a lot of time in the building where the shooting happened. And something happened in Portugal at the Instituto Superior Technico, where Valente seems to have been terminated from some kind of position (student? staff?) at IST the same year that Nuno Loureiro (the MIT shooting victim) graduated from IST. The Boston US Attorney says that Valente and Loureiro did know each other in Portugal.

It looks to me like Valente might have been nursing some kind of grudge against both Brown and Loureiro for 25 years. And he finally got his payback.

I hope they've got more connecting Claudio Neves Valente to Nuno Loureiro's murder than just both men being Portuguese in origin. Hopefully the former wasn't dying from terminal cancer or something. "Hey, we'll give your family _X_ amount of money if you [...] and then you can..."
