Trump praises "very productive" Mar-a-Lago meeting with Trudeau (Canadian community) - C C - Nov 30, 2024

EXCERPTS: Donald Trump said he had a "very productive meeting" with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, after the two leaders met at Trump's Florida estate Mar-a-Lago.

[...] Trudeau travelled to West Palm Beach as Canada seeks to head off the president-elect's threat to impose a 25% tariff on Canadian goods, a source has confirmed to the BBC. Canadian media reported that Trudeau landed in Palm Beach International Airport on Friday evening to visit Trump at his Mar-a-Lago estate.

[...] But much of Trump's Saturday afternoon statement following the meeting focused on the "drug crisis that has decimated so many lives".

"I made it very clear that the United States will no longer sit idly by as our Citizens become victims to the scourge of this Drug Epidemic, caused mainly by the Drug Cartels, and Fentanyl pouring in from China," Trump wrote. "Prime Minister Trudeau has made a commitment to work with us to end this terrible devastation."

[...] Leaving his hotel in Palm Beach on Saturday morning, Trudeau ignored questions from reporters about whether he and Trump had discussed potential tariffs. The trip was not included on Trudeau's public itinerary for Friday.

[...] Trudeau has often underscored that the two countries were able to successfully renegotiate a major trade pact during Trump's first term, though the relationship between the two leaders has occasionally been rocky.

On Friday, speaking at an event in Prince Edward Island, Trudeau said the two countries "rolled up our sleeves and were able to create jobs on both sides of the border". He said looked forward to having many "great" conversations with Trump... (MORE - missing details)

I just hope Trump eats up Pierre Poilievre, the Progressive Conservative leader ahead in the election polls and more than likely next PM. Professional politician who tells us nothing but has plenty of negativity towards Trudeau. In my mind he’s the F150, flag waving, horn honking, beer swilling, gun rack, trucker convoy leader of the country. Put the hurt on this guy Donald. We’d deserve it for voting this guy in….IMO

I'm confused. Why is are the truckers who protested forced vaccinations bad?
How is Poilievre not better than Trudeau?

Moron Trudeau has decided to wage a trade war against the biggest economy in the world, by imposing a 25% tariff on US goods... instead of simply agreeing to help secure his own border.

Trump has already gotten Mexico to move in the direction he wants and in response has agreed to pause the threatened 25% tariff on imports from that country. Mexico agrees to send 10,000 Mexican soldiers to the US border, tasked with halting drug smuggling and migrant crossings. And the US and Mexico agree to immediately start talks at the highest level to achieve a more long-term "deal".

Justin Trudeau can do the same kind of thing that Claudia Scheinbaum just did any time he wants to.

Trudeau already has capitulated. All those counter-threats were very short-lived.

This is more or less the United States' strong-handed way of doing things[1] before the products of latter half 20th-century literary intellectualism took over policy. One might thereby contend that Trump is an atavist President, albeit far more plain speaking or verbally reckless than those of old. Something well known, IOW, rather something unknown and alien to US history. If Trump is a fascist, then the whole history of the US prior to the 1970s was fascism.

[1] Granted that the border patrolling commitments aren't an empty facade on the part of Mexico and Canada, that whooshes over the administration's head for the next four years.

Zeihan: "The phase one trade deal [...] seven, six years ago, committed the Chinese to buying X number of dollars of various [US] products... But by the end of the [first] Trump term, China hadn’t met any of the criteria at all. In fact, they never intended to."

The actual thing that Trump has been into is Jingoism (wikipedia.org). While it's all very well for a leader of a country to want to put their country first, thats not really what Trump is doing. Shaking up the markets is what it's really about, I wouldn't be surprised if there is a whole lot of money that had originally been collected up (Trumps War Chest) now being used to exploit the disparity caused by the potential of ramifications. If he was to follow through then he'd only lose on the money being used, it's pretty much a Insider Day Trading exploit.

Justin Trudeau says:

I just had a good call with President Trump. Canada is implementing our $1.3 billion border plan — reinforcing the border with new choppers, technology and personnel, enhanced coordination with our American partners, and increased resources to stop the flow of fentanyl. Nearly 10,000 frontline personnel are and will be working on protecting the border.

In addition, Canada is making new commitments to appoint a Fentanyl Czar, we will list cartels as terrorists, ensure 24/7 eyes on the border, launch a Canada- U.S. Joint Strike Force to combat organized crime, fentanyl and money laundering. I have also signed a new intelligence directive on organized crime and fentanyl and we will be backing it with $200 million.

Proposed tariffs will be paused for at least 30 days while we work together.
