Crowdstrike - Yazata - Jul 19, 2024 Crowdstrike is a company that produces computer security software that is widely used by big business and governments around the world. And last night they put out a faulty update to windows computers that made them display the 'blue screen of death' as they went into an endless loop. The result is worldwide chaos. All of the major US airlines have declared a ground stop. Hospitals are delaying surgeries and other medical procedures. UPS and FedEx are halted. The US Social Security offices are closed. 911 services are down many places. The London Stock Exchange is crashed... It's big and it's worldwide. Crowdstrike has already put out a corrected update, but IT people worldwide will still have to dig into each individual affected device to delete the faulty software update and then reboot. "Ciaran Martin, former director of the U.K. National Cyber Security Centre, told Forbes: “The damage happened where CrowdStrike and Windows are both used ... That’s a lot of important companies. It’s a striking and very concerning illustration of the fragility of digital infrastructure.” Ciaran noted that while the update fixing the issue can be rolled out “quite quickly,” different organizations could take time to implement it “And then there’s the massive logistical tailback in things like aviation.” https://techcrunch.com/2024/07/19/what-we-know-about-crowdstrikes-update-fail-thats-causing-global-outages-and-travel-chaos/ https://www.msn.com/en-us/money/companies/massive-global-tech-outage-crowdstrike-update-slams-banks-airlines-and-more/ar-BB1qgoFa https://www.msn.com/en-us/travel/news/diary-of-a-crowdstrike-crash-heres-who-got-hit-by-the-windows-outage/ar-BB1qi9aS RE: Crowdstrike - Syne - Jul 19, 2024 That's why you don't let your computers update automatically. At least not until an update has been in the wild for a week or two. RE: Crowdstrike - Zinjanthropos - Jul 25, 2024 Looks as if Crowdstrike didn’t anticipate their token peace offering to business partners would be an opportunity for fraudsters. I don’t think this is a top notch security firm but people think so. Maybe fraud on a larger front, like market manipulation perhaps. https://www.fastcompany.com/91162328/crowdstrike-offers-10-uber-eats-gift-cards-as-an-apology-for-the-outage |
