Bismuth is Interesting - Yazata - May 9, 2024

Bismuth is a heavy chemical element, atomic number 83, symbol Bi. It's related to arsenic and antimony, which occupy the same column in the periodic table. It's the most dimagnetic element known and is very thermally conductive. It used to be believed that bismuth has the highest atomic number of any element that does not spontaneously decay, but it's now believed to be very weakly radioactive, with a halflife of about a billion times the estimated age of the universe.

Bismuth has a low melting point and can be melted on a stovetop. When it resolidifies, it forms crazy crystals.

Here's a guy who turns his saucepan into an artificial geode.

The iridescent colors often seen are the result of a thin film of oxidation on the metal surface.
