The Soviet version of "Lord of the Rings" (1991) - C C - May 19, 2023

Made it to YouTube a couple of years ago. Live, theatrical play like production, filmed on cheap videotape, shot in less than a week. Comments: "Ludicrous" ... "Gloriously rudimentary" ... "As absurd and monstrous as it is divine and magnificent." ... "Weirdly psychedelic reimagining." ... "Fairy-tale surrealism"

Khraniteli (Russian: Хранители, lit. 'Guardians [of the Ring]') is a Soviet television play miniseries based on J. R. R. Tolkien's The Fellowship of the Ring. It was broadcast once in 1991 by Leningrad Television and then thought lost. It was rediscovered in 2021. It includes scenes of Tom Bombadil and Goldberry that were omitted from Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings film trilogy. [...] Khraniteli is in two parts, of 50 minutes and 64 minutes respectively.
