I witnessed it happen to my mom. Within a couple of months of being severeley traumatized by the town administrators, she had lost about 90% of her ability to remember short term, and had to have extensive, basically around the clock care.

My mom never lost her memory but gradually lost her ability to understand things and to walk. I never knew dementia affected motor coordination, but hell it's the brain, so why not? She lived in a senior center the last 4 years of her life and finally died of kidney failure. I suspect she had vascular dementia, which relates to constricted blood flow to the various parts of the brain. I was glad she went quick and was spared the despairing life of long term Alzheimer's.
