Wow - if this isn't a clincher that blows out of the water all those 'Venus, Jupiter, aircraft landing lights, swamp-gas etc. etc. skeptics nonsense, then what is?
Well...See last comment, by Ricardo Campo Pérez. Event was actually owing to a US Navy Poseidon missile launch. A highly unusual confluence of events.
BTW - evidently our very own James R makes an appearance as commenter! A favorite haunt, at least back then.

Yeah I well remember the initial media frenzy at the time. Took a few days for the truth to emerge - a failed Russian missile test.
A work colleague at the time was convinced it was a portal opening from/into 'another dimension'. Yes - but only of the imagination.
