EXCERPTS: One changed word may not seem like much. But one Catholic priest's use of the word 'we' instead of 'I' during both English and Spanish language baptism ceremonies during his two decades in the ministry has left thousands of baptisms invalid in multiple parishes in two countries.

Father Andres Arango stood down from his role as a pastor with the Diocese of Phoenix in the United States earlier this month after it was revealed he had used this formula during the sacrament: "We baptise you in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit".

Instead, he should have said the same words starting with "I baptise you … "

[...] It does not stop there, with the Diocese of Phoenix saying invalid baptisms would also invalidate subsequent confirmations, marriages and holy orders.

After learning of the mistake, Bishop of Phoenix Thomas J Olmstead said he had consulted with diocesan officials and the Vatican's Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, and been informed that the baptisms were invalid.

[...] The Diocese of Phoenix said it was working with those affected and there would be some flow-on effects, including a reminder that only those who had been validly baptised could receive communion. "As the entry point to other sacraments, an invalid baptism therefore invalidates any subsequent sacraments, especially confirmation, marriage and holy orders (ordination to the priesthood or diaconate)", the Diocese of Phoenix wrote on its website.

While Fr Andres has resigned from his position as pastor, the Diocese of Phoenix said he was not disqualified from vocation and ministry and remained "a priest in good standing"... (MORE - missing details)

Another reason why Catholicism is dumb.

Imagine going to hell on a technicality. Should find a lot of lawyers down there to plead your case however.

Maybe that'd be one of those "pray them out of purgatory" things. Another Catholic idiocy.

I don’t understand why God would care. I guess if he doesn’t then baptism isn’t really necessary at all. Yet it is income for the church. Last I checked, baptism isn’t free. Best to have faithful believe God gives a damn about exact wording or the whole ritual is a sham….it’s the only thing that makes sense to me.

In other denominations, baptism is free and devoid of legalistic ritual. Laissez-faire baptism, if you will.

The idea that god cares about specific wording is ridiculous, as a god could see into your intent.

Makes me think of some poor kid who got the double, baptized as a baby and later in life sexually molested by same priest. Wonder if Catholics have a rule that voids baptism should that occur?

Baptism by fire?

Ouch! Don’t wish that on anybody. How badly does a baby need baptism? New recruits (adults)?

What about Catholic marriages? I married into a Catholic family and was asked to provide proof of my own baptism. My mom who is Catholic didn’t have any parchment so I needed a note from her before I could tie the knot.

Do you think Catholics with invalid baptisms should have their marriages annulled or is there grounds for more lawsuits? They may need to subpoena God if so, idk.

Sometimes there is just something profoundly impractical about religious logic.
