Calder Fire Threatens Lake Tahoe - Yazata - Aug 26, 2021

It's a big fire burning in much of El Dorado county from the eastern exurban fringes of the Sacramento metropolitan area in the west almost to Lake Tahoe in the east. It's an area where my family and I spent time when I was a youth (triassic era). My brother got married here.

126,000 acres, 12% containment. 2,663 firemen, 243 engines, 18 helicopters, 51 dozers, 465 single residences destroyed, 11 commercial buildings destroyed, 167 minor structures, 17,488 structures threatened.

Air quality in the Tahoe basin is a real problem, since smoke is blowing northeastwards and is being trapped there. They say that they will start evacuating the Lake Tahoe area (a major resort area) if the fire crests the Sierra mountains. Smoke is also blanketing nearby Reno where people are being advised to stay indoors.

RE: Calder Fire Threatens Lake Tahoe - Yazata - Aug 31, 2021

Conditions aren't improving. The fire has crossed the ridge of the Sierras and is burning in the direction of South Lake Tahoe. Reports that at least one prominent ski resort has burned. Others are threatened. Fire is approaching the Lake Tahoe Airport (where billionaires fly in on their private jets to visit their palatial compounds). The community of South Lake Tahoe has been given an evacuation warning (not order at this point) and roads are jammed with people leaving.

Looks like all of the city of South Lake Tahoe has been ordered to evacuate, some 22,000 people. There are also evacuation orders on the nevada side of the state line. Fire is burning right outside Meyers, a small community just south of South Lake Tahoe by the South Lake Tahoe airport. More world famous winter ski resorts threatened.

In map below (from Calfire) the pink area is mandatory evacuation zone, red area at the bottom left is closest point where fire is burning, line on right is state line.
