EXCERPTS: NASA's new chief is setting up an effort to further study unidentified flying objects within his first month in office. Bill Nelson, the former Florida senator and spaceflight veteran, told CNN Business' Rachel Crane during a wide-ranging interview on Thursday that it's not clear to anyone — even in the upper echelons of the US space agency — what the high-speed objects observed by Navy pilots are.

Nelson added that he does not believe the UFOs are evidence of extraterrestrials visiting Earth. "I think I would know" if that were the case, Nelson said. But, he acknowledged, it'd be premature to rule that out as a possibility.

[...] NASA press secretary Jackie McGuinness said Nelson did not establish a formal task force to begin investigating UFOs. However, he did direct researchers to move forward with exploring any lines of questioning around the topic as they see fit.
"There's not really a lot of data and...scientists should be free to follow these leads, and it shouldn't be stigmatized," McGuinness said, acknowledging that UFO research can be negatively associated with unfounded conspiracy theories. "This is a really interesting phenomenon and Americans are clearly interested in it [so if] the scientists want to investigate, they should."

[...] "People tend to underestimate nature. Nature is an amazing place where a lot of miracles happen. And once we understand, it's like, 'Why didn't we think of that?'" he said. "In the realm of science we're all about unidentified issues and objects...So, using the tools of science, we will do whatever we can to move our understanding forward." (MORE - details)

For God's (oops) sake, don't tell the self-styled "skeptics" over on the other board that the new nasa administrator said that! They would probably try to sneer him to death.

How would he know? It's not like all extraterrestrial visitors have to check in with nasa and get a visa when they cross the Karman line.

Good for him! One shouldn't close off possibilities until they have really been eliminated.

If the military believes that something was really there and they don't know what it was, then one can almost certainly assume that a frantic investigation of some sort is already underway, simply for national security reasons. So if the Pentagon is already on it, there might be no reason for a duplicate investigation. Of course lots of this would be classified, so there's limits on what they can say.

On the other hand, if the military believes that something was really there and they do know what it was (it was them) then they might want to avoid any investigations to avoid outing a super-secret black project of theirs.

He said that??!! It sounds like something I would say (and in fact have said repeatedly, getting flamed for it each time). My only quibble is that I would use the word "anomalies" for what he called "miracles". But I expect that he meant pretty much the same thing.

Presuming NASA is still about the science, that's not how science works. Everything is not "on the table" until exhaustively proven otherwise. Nothing is on the table until directly evidenced, because that's how the parsimony of scientific presumption works.

If there's convincing evidence that they are real, then pretty much all the possibilities as to what they are remain until they can be eliminated. US or foreign aircraft of some unfamiliar type, or something much more exotic.

If the descriptions of the tic-tacs performance can be believed, then they would seem to be far in advance of any publicly known aircraft technology. That would seem to strengthen the more exotic possibilities, one of which might be extraterrestrials.

Sorry, that's not how science works. If they are real, science is wholly agnostic as to their origin (aside from the basic null hypothesis that they are terrestrial) until there is some evidence in any particular direction. It's not like the law, where innocent (anything) until proven guilty (something). "If descriptions...can be believed" is not evidence.

"Convincing evidence that they are real" would necessarily include evidence of a particular origin. If such evidence is not strong enough to point to a particular origin, it's not likely to be broadly convincing. Just like evidence of god, ghosts, big foot, etc.. Convincing is usually along the lines of demonstrable, and we cannot demonstrate the unknown, like the extraterrestrial.

As much as we like to believe we are "up" on whatever lies out there in the universe, nature is always several steps beyond us in this respect. Science has always been energized by standing on the brink between known and unknownness. Perhaps it will find itself similarly charged up and opened up to jaw-dropping possibilities by turning its attention to the ufo phenomena.

More details about a post I made here:-
https://www.scivillage.com/thread-10419-...l#pid44033

The event described took place in Budapest (Hungary). I dated the event to (at latest) 1958. I found out more about my friend at his funeral than I ever did when he was alive. Russia invaded Hungary in 1956 - my friend fled Hungary (to Switzerland (funeral info)) 'as a boy' to avoid arrest by the Russians - from the description 'boy' this would make him 17 or under so at the very latest 1958.

In fairness a similar effect might now be created by a huge cluster of synced drones - but this would not have been possible in 1958 - or even 1980 when the account was given. Discarding the impossible leaves only the improbable.

I have to wonder 'Why?'. This was a conflict zone but far from the worst in recent history.

The less scrutinized engagements of history equal fewer problems for time-travel probes. That self-assemble from the ensuing replications of a single PicoBot transmitted to the past.

Or, it was a safe, confirmed sighting already documented, so some future archailect simply did its part to realize it. Wink
