EXCERPT: . . . The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reports that Trump had privately discussed plans to buy Greenland in conversations with aides on numerous occasions. The claim was later backed up by a “Trump ally” to the Associated Press.

While the WSJ noted that he had spoken about the purchase with "varying degrees of seriousness,” it’s said that the President was attracted by the island’s large deposits of natural resources, including coal, zinc, copper, and iron ore. There's also its important strategic role (which we'll touch on later). Needless to say, Greenland has clearly stated it’s not on the market.

A handful of Danish and Greenlandic politicians have since made comments about the prospect of such a deal and, perhaps unsurprisingly, they weren’t exactly overjoyed at the notion. [...] “If he is truly contemplating this, then this is final proof, that he has gone mad,” spokesman Soren Espersen told broadcaster DR, according to Reuters.

[...] It's also worth considering that China has been showing a growing interest in Greenland by bidding for contracts with the Greenland government. There was even some speculation that China was vying for a military base on the island (MORE)
Shortly after buying Alaska, the US considered buying Greenland and Iceland. So this is not a new or surprising idea.

GONE mad? He's been there for years.

I particularly liked Andy Borowitz's take on this:

COPENHAGEN (The Borowitz Report)—After rebuffing Donald J. Trump’s hypothetical proposal to purchase Greenland, the government of Denmark has announced that it would be interested in buying the United States instead.

“As we have stated, Greenland is not for sale,” a spokesperson for the Danish government said on Friday. “We have noted, however, that during the Trump regime pretty much everything in the United States, including its government, has most definitely been for sale.”

“Denmark would be interested in purchasing the United States in its entirety, with the exception of its government,” the spokesperson added.
A key provision of the purchase offer, the spokesperson said, would be the relocation of Donald Trump to another country “to be determined,” with Russia and North Korea cited as possible destinations.

If Denmark’s bid for the United States is accepted, the Scandinavian nation has ambitious plans for its new acquisition. “We believe that, by giving the U.S. an educational system and national health care, it could be transformed from a vast land mass into a great nation,” the spokesperson said.
Leftist fever dreams. The US could actually afford to buy Greenland.

And notice it's "a spokesperson for the Danish government", whereas their Prime Minister has said "Denmark is far from a socialist planned economy. Denmark is a market economy." (Vox) So, leftists in the Danish government saying leftist crap about non-leftists in the US. Rolleyes

And dumb US leftists eating it up.

Heh, they even read it. Karsten Brønnum posted it on his Twitter account, and then Søren Espersen retweeted the latter on his.

Espersend: "Greenland has been a part of the Danish / Norwegian kingdom for about 500 years before there was anything called the United States at all. But that kind of detail doesn't interest the trader at the White House. I make myself available for free if he wants a quick history lesson!"
I agree that the US purchasing Greenland is exceedingly unlikely. But it isn't totally ridiculous.

Greenland has a tiny population of 56,000. The US could pay each individual in Greenland $1 million dollars US, and that would 'only' total $56 billion. Give the islanders a similar degree of autonomy and home rule that they enjoy now with Denmark, along with US citizenship and free right of entry into the US, and joining the US might become a more attractive proposition to a majority of Greenland voters than remaining with Denmark.

If Denmark balks, the Greenlanders could just declare independence and then ask to become an autonomous territory of the US.

The US could fund development of Greenland's abundant natural resources and potential so as to make back the purchase price while supplying job opportunities to the locals. And the local territorial government could have taxation powers over any new projects so as to ensure them continuing income.

Nope.  You can't buy something that's not for sale.

I notice your knee is jerking there.  A bit of socialist derangement syndrome, perhaps?

Who said you could?
Oh right, your cited source did:

The obvious point you missed (are trolling over) is that one has the possible capability while the other never could.

Nah, the US has far too many safeguards against anything even approaching that. And you're obviously projecting your own knee jerk/deranged reaction to the PM of Denmark, of all people, dashing your misconception of socialism. Poor kid. Cry
