Middlesbrough youths stood on fire crews' hoses (UK)

EXCERPT: Firefighters tackling a blaze in Middlesbrough came under attack from youngsters who threw wood and stood on hoses to prevent the flow of water. Youths also opened the rear doors of fire engines to try to remove life-saving equipment, Cleveland Fire Brigade said.

It happened as crews were trying to put out a rubbish blaze in the Fransham Road area of the town.

The youngsters also tried to start another fire nearby, the brigade said.

Davey Howe, of the Fire Brigades Union, said youngsters see such attacks as being "almost like a game".

CCTV footage of the trouble, which happened on Thursday evening, has been passed to police.

It was the latest in a number of incidents over recent days - one of which saw between 30 and 40 youngsters at the scene, according to the brigade....

Australia to stop religious schools rejecting gay students

EXCERPT: Australia's prime minister has promised to ban religious schools from discriminating against gay students. Scott Morrison said new legislation would "make it clear that no student of a non-state school should be expelled on the basis of their sexuality".

Some Australian states allow such schools to turn away gay students. The issue has been hotly debated in the country after recommendations of a report on religious freedom were leaked earlier this week. The report, commissioned after same-sex marriage was made legal last year, suggested that procedures for non-state schools to reject gay students should be made consistent nationwide, raising the possibility of allowing such rejections across Australia.

On Wednesday Mr Morrison, who leads the centre-right Liberal-National coalition, said the proposals - which included some safeguards for gay students - would be considered "carefully and respectfully". But on Saturday he made clear that religious schools would not be allowed to discriminate under new legislation....

No idea why a religious school would ban gay students. Teachers and staff, sure, but if parents want to send their gay child to a religious school, they can learn the religious take on homosexuality.
