It's about 100 miles west of the big island and is heading north, towards Honolulu. Luckily its wind speeds are weakening due to wind shear and the storm is expected to veer west so as to miss landfall on the islands.

But it's big and wet and torrential rains are expected with the threat of flash flooding. It's already happening to a limited extent around Hilo.

Reportedly all the Navy ships in Hawaii (Pearl Harbor obviously is a major fleet base) have steamed out of port away from the storm. Most of the military aircraft on the islands have flown out, to the US west coast presumably. A joint command center has been set up, under the overall command of the Hawaii National Guard and the Hawaii state government, in coordination with the other military services.

Hawaiians are being advised to shelter in place, unless they are located someplace deemed unsafe, in which case they should go to a shelter.

Crowds are mobbing food markets, home improvement stores and are lined up at gas stations.
