According to Stryder, something magical happens after your 5th post. You get to start your own threads and maybe other features become active. That's information from an old post. Hopefully it hasn't become obsolete since then.

You should find if you post some replies to threads in the main forums that you'll get to the point of [s]advertising cheap viagra[s] ... being able to create threads and not suffer some of the indignant limitations of just joining. While it can be a slight nuisance to be railroaded into having training wheels, it does curb the majority of one time thread creation spam. (although it sometimes makes an appearance.)
