Or at least soft agile 3-D printed robots capable of the flexibility and ability to squeeze through small holes characteristic of octopuses and squid. The Army Research Laboratory and the University of Minnesota are working on it.

The story seems a bit over-the-top, but it suggests that these things might someday be printed out as needed right there on the battlefield.

I don't know what the 'self-aware' bit means. Autonomous?
Hadn't really considered 3D printing replacing conventional industrial manufacturing for stocking a Skynet wannabe with an army of robot minions. It would need foraging spider-robots to harvest, process, and excrete the liquid and powder raw material necessary for such additive manufacturing.
