Did you happen to see those photos of flight patterns by Xavi Bou?  They're pretty cool.

Well, today I found out that phonons can transfer heat between non-touching objects in a vacuum. I did not know that was possible.

"Heat can be conducted across a nanometre-sized vacuum gap – something that was deemed impossible until now.

Heat is transferred via an effect called "phonon tunneling" in which quantized molecular vibrations, called phonons, appear to traverse the forbidden zone.

Heat flow between two objects via conduction can normally only occur when the objects are in contact with each other. This process occurs when phonons – quanta of vibrational energy – are transferred from the hotter object to the cooler one. Until now, such transfer was thought to be impossible between non-touching objects in a vacuum because the vacuum is a forbidden zone for phonons."

Hmm…Van der Waals forces or Evanescent Field?

It’s funny how simple politeness can make you stand out.  This older woman caught my attention because there was enough distance between us, but as she walked past us, she said, "Excuse me, ladies." There was a group of younger women and one them said, "I wonder why men’s and women’s buttons are on the opposite side."  She said because women were usually dressed by servants but men dressed themselves.  According to this article, no one really knows for sure but that is one of the more popular theories.

My son had his favorite ball cap confiscated by a teacher in high school.  He was really upset about it and thought it was male discrimination.  I advised him to research the origin of hat etiquette and write an essay.  He did and she promptly returned his hat.

But just like with the buttons, there’s not much evidence supporting either theories.

What do you guys think?

if a female takes off her bonnet and lets her hair down..
what is the expected meaning ?

does the school issue hats to girls ?
is the school issuing uniform and behaviour based purely on gender ?

if you teach a child that gender defines the type of respect you get then what difference does it make when you start to politacise identity politics of gender conformity rules ?

is it not simply teaching the child to be a hypocrite and to be corrupt in how they manage and control power ?

No, the paper is about Phonons.

It's etiquette–social constructs. It just depends on cultural and conventional norms. You know that.
... That smoke particles condense water vapor, like when a sweet potato burns to a crisp.  Afterward, in a chilly room, breath condenses and just moist hands steam.
Gulls just want to have fun?

During recent storms I've wondered what the local gulls were up to. Hunger and cold don't seem to be a problem - though how and when they feed I don't know.

I went to a bit of the sea front known for the best waves - and there were all/most/some of the local gulls. They were landing at the point where the waves went up and down the most (maybe 8 feet) and flying off if a wave was about to break over them - and then they'd go back. Lot's of gulls watching (maybe 20) so it might be an initiation ritual or just showing off. There were some smaller gull types (terns?) doing the same thing - the two species playing nicely together.
California has the highest poverty, when accounting for cost of living. http://www.politifact.com/california/sta...ty-rate-w/

@Syne and homeless in Ananheim - I would be interested to hear your thoughts - another thread perhaps.
"Here’s what was collected between Jan. 22 and March 3 from a more than two-mile stretch of bike trail roughly from I-5 in Orange to Ball Road in Anaheim, according to OC Public Works spokesman Shannon Widor:

404 tons of debris
13,950 needles (approximate number based on what disposal containers hold)
5,279 pounds of hazardous waste (human waste, propane, pesticides and other materials)

More than 700 people were living in the encampments when they were dismantled in late February. Most of those people are being housed temporarily in local motels while county outreach workers assess their need for services and housing.

Considering a large percent of homeless tend to be mentally ill, money might be better spent improving mental care facilities...if only the federal government hadn't pretty much taken that over from states under JFK.

Ronald Reagan was part of it, too.
