A 3.5 not far from me on Saturday. I was at home at the time, but didn't feel anything.

Magnitude 4.5 not far from me Monday night. I was at home at the time, but didn't feel anything.

Another 4.7 earthquake, this one east of Monterey and Salinas. I was out at the time and didn't feel anything. It doesn't seem to be related to the earthquake Monday night, less than 24 hours earlier, since they happened on different faults. This one happened near one of California's earthquake hot-spots where quakes are common and the geologists have lots of instruments stationed.

https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/.../executive

Edit: another earthquake just happened 10 minutes ago, M 3.4, centered where Monday night's earthquake was. It's probably an aftershock. Again, I felt nothing.

roughly 50 kilometers from the cost
probably felt by some people
fairly reasonable depth to feel it
note pattern
direction and intensity

5.2 then 5.7 then 6 then 6
last 4.9 is probably some peripheral energy shaken loose.

my feeling is that because of the time difference of one hour after the original 6.0 another 6.0
this suggests to me a less likely chance of a bigger one than 6.0
if the second 6.0 had not happened(it would suggest to me a potential 7.2 to 7.5 was imminent somewhere along that fault line or an adjacent fault line.). i would be packing my bags and heading for the high lands if i lived in that coastal region had the 2nd 6.0 not happened, roughly 1 hour later showing it is not a reflection off a false read etc...).

i would rate this as California christmas present because it didnt happen on land in a city area.(lucky)
still feels a bit tense though ... (i felt these , the 1st one felt considerably larger than a 6.0)

fyi while the earth is on the other side of the solar system from all the other planets, i am expecting a high likely hood of larger quakes.

my suspicion is that the change in gravity and the EM fields effects the tectonic plates & electro-conductivity of the earths magnetic field combined resulting in a collective larger change of force, be that greater or smaller resulting in forcing or lack of holding.

generically i would expect the tectonic plates to move more freely at this time for the next month or so. this could increase or decrease the chance of larger quakes dependent on the build up of pressure on existing movement.
in some places i would expect the plates to move more freely resulting in less larger quakes, while in other parts where it tends to stick a lot i would expect it to create larger quakes.

places like the san adres and the general us Canada west cost pacific rim fault lines this would be good news
while for some areas with combined pressure from several plates combining like the fault line in the south west of Malaysia this would be bad news(though there is not many people around there and large quakes that happen hundreds of kilometers out to see are rarely noticed unless they cause a tsunami which might in the past wipe out one or several villages and people, the news would not travel so the event would not get recorded..

very large after shock also very close behind
so close behind i suspect it may be a single energy or there might be larger movement to come based on the deeper 6.0 in Argentina previously.

epicenter is close to a very long bridge that services remote farming communities.
i would be surprised if the bridge held together.
hopefully it did.
the wide river that shows it gets flood waters, likely has some land subsidence upstream which hopefully has not blocked causing a damn burt, it will probably silt the water which they would use for drinking.

note san adres fault line connection and fault line around panama
very similar pattern of quakes going in the same direction yesterday and the day before

thats good news because it means the plates are moving freely at an energy that is not damaging people or city.

pacific tsunami warning center says no threat
[/url]

it seems the pacific rim has gone through a bit of a quiet patch around a week ago

but has come back to its normal level of activity.

i noticed this slightly shallower than normal quake just off puerto rico and see they have had a large amount of smaller quakes in a very small area.

though, there seems to be standard through puerto rico to cuba along the plate line

they seem to get cluster quakes very often.

do i think it indicates anything ? short answer is i dont know, from what i have noticed it appears the bigger quakes around this area happen when there is less activity, and generally follow a lower activity period where there is larger quakes on plate boundary's

some weird type set glitch
As RU is reporting up above, Puerto Rico is getting hit by a succession of earthquakes.

Just today 1-7-20... the USGS has 30 of them and they seem to be occurring every few minutes. Most are in the 3-4 range. In my experience 3's are are only weakly noticeable, 4's are definitely and distinctly noticeable but earthquake veterans kind of shug them off with a bit of bravado. 5's are starting to get scary and 6's are edging into disaster territory.

I'll only list the ones today over 5.0. Most recent on top:

5.6 https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/.../executive
5.0 https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/.../executive
5.6 https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/.../executive
6.4 https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/.../executive

5's aren't really huge earthquakes, just moderate-large. But 6.4 is definitely edging up there and can cause quite a bit of damage.

This is the USGS's damage prediction for the biggest 6.4 one, based on their models:

https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/...6vll/pager

The succession of earthquakes (the first damages something, the later ones make it tumble down) and the prevalence of shoddy construction in Puerto Rico might make damage worse.

There are reports of injuries and at least one death. Electric power is out for the entire island. The Electric Power Authority says that this is because a power plant near the earthquakes was damaged and its going off-line tripped all the breakers and took the whole system down. They say that they hope to have power restored to most of the island later today.

https://twitter.com/AEEONLINE/status/121...3429096449

https://twitter.com/caribnews/status/121...2441360384

The tsunami warning people had a tsunami warning but canceled it.

Puerto Rico is no stranger to earthquakes. A 7.4 in 1918 killed more than 100 people. The island is where the Caribbean plate hits the North American plate.

The damage in the photos below (some of this morning's damage from PR) is fairly typical when earthquakes strike buildings set on pillars above a parking garage below. (California is filled with them.) The pillars give way and the whole thing comes down.

poor ol puerto rico

i would imagine a large proportion of their income comes from tourism, tips & family sending wages back home.
with an economy that has stagnated through lack of independence.
the obvious answer is 1 option of 2 things

1 become a tax haven and self rule & open up to banks & large multi national companys.
boosts tourism
2 the usa builds a large naval military base that employs locals and puts wages into the local economy.
boosts tourism

https://prospect.org/infrastructure/puer...blue-wave/

considering it is an active earth quake zone, im not sure anyone would want to build high rises or large technical structures.
2 story flexible tourist hotels & fishing charters, casinos and day spas...
with a very large luxury yacht marina would seem a lot more logical
changing the tax status to attract the worlds rich & famous super yachts as a stop over would vastly increase revenue.

anywho
good ideas dont grow on trees
