Let's drift away from prose; see what we knows
Honesty, Transparency
or Predictability
'Tis a question of three, who'll play with me?
Just a bit of fun
Won't hurt no one
Rock, Scissors, paper
A little caper
Harder than I thought, this
Might take a while
Hang on... am I confusing my style?
Not claiming I know it
Nor even I'm a poet
Just something to do
Honesty, Transparency, predictability
Those three, Transparency trumps honesty
Sans the former, honesty backed into a corner
Leaves two
Predictability and Transparency
Latter needs a who
I'm a little cynical, y'see
So
Only one left
Predictability
And I'm good at that.

Like Geology-etc and Meteorology-etc could be combined under a broader category. But OTOH, the narrower categories might even be a good thing if the board was thronging with members. Perhaps they just seem excessive in number do to so few posting here. Plus, I have no idea what they're doing in terms of attracting lurkers / hidden traffic and search engine attention, as compared to a board with few sub-forums.
At this late stage I'm not sure combining some categories could be even done without losing the past two years. Or it being too complicated and time consuming. Depends, I guess, upon whatever re-adjustment capacities come with a MyBB forum. (Apparently a heckuva lot more possibilities are available than I once would have thought, given the range of modifications Stryder is introducing).

I don't think I'll be shifting the categories just yet. I'd consider though at some point in the future we are going to have some new software deployed (I can't give an ETA currently for that), when that happens, during it's implementation (as I'll likely run it parallel to the current forum while it's getting setup) We (since I'm going to be encouraging involvement from the members) will look at how the categories can be combined and if they should be combined.
Currently though I don't think you'll find it's the number of categories that cause concern, it's likely down to the technology gap in relationship to how technologies have changed and methods of communication (commentary in blogging, social media sites etc). I'd guess the majority of people want a simplified interface with a limited number of buttons, with easy methods of signing in/communicating on a responsive design that will fit on whatever they choose to access the site with. (The problem there is I don't have the high-end I-candy, the current level of coding skills or using the most recent versions of everything to get it done :/ )

Yes, you are, but how’s that working for you?

You could include common misspellings in your search terms.

Unfortunately it would be seen by search engines as attempted hit inflation and would likely get the site demoted :/
Currently the plan is to fix up a responsive design so that the site will work with other devices (phones, ipads, toasters etc okay perhaps not toasters.)
When that's done it should be closer to a technology level that other people are acquainted with, however I'm going to try and not let that change what we are use to either (I'll make sure this current theme is still available to all should the change not be particular wanted)
While doing the redesigned theme, I came across an old screen capture of what could of been part of the forum during a preliminary phase before anyone joined. It's an out-take because I reasoned it would likely be seen as insensitive.

Attempting to look like you are actually doing something useful.
Hey, that's me. That’s what I do, but that in and of itself is quite useful.
