Young teenagers are less likely to identify as lesbian, gay or bisexual than they were a few years ago, according to a new analysis of Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data.

The decline is particularly striking among ninth-grade girls, according to Jean Twenge, a professor of psychology at San Diego State University who published her analysis of the 2025 data on her Substack “Generation Tech.” In 2021, 30 percent of ninth-grade girls identified as lesbian or bisexual. Last year, 17 percent did.

“It really does look like a free fall,” Twenge said. “But what’s causing it is unclear.”

Twenge has been researching generational differences for decades. As part of that work, she regularly analyzes data from the CDC’s biennial Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System.

The rate of boys who identify as gay or bisexual has remained roughly the same over the past decade. But a few years ago, after the pandemic shutdowns, the CDC data showed big upticks in the percentage of high school girls identifying as lesbian or bisexual. Within a few years, those rates began to drop, but only by a few percentage points. Though the overall numbers have continued to decline, older teenagers’ sexual orientation has held relatively stable. They are still more likely to identify as lesbian or bisexual than teenagers were before the pandemic.

The “free fall,” Twenge found, mostly comes from a huge drop in the number of freshmen girls who identify as bisexual. While 26 percent of ninth-grade girls identified as bisexual in 2021, only 13 percent — half as many — did in 2025.

Online, conservative activists celebrated the news as a win brought on by the Donald Trump administration. “Amazing what happens when you cut the Department of Education and USAID,” Terry Schilling, the head of the American Principles Project, wrote on X.

But Twenge said the initial declines began during Joe Biden’s presidency, and the data doesn’t explain why a change in administration would affect one age group and not another.

“If it was politics, why would that only have an effect on ninth-graders and not 17- and 18-year-olds?” she asked. “It maybe has something to do with it, but it’s clearly not the only thing going on. It’s a mystery.”

Jody Herman, senior scholar at the Williams Institute, a research center at UCLA on sexual orientation and gender identity law and public policy, questioned whether the data revealed a meaningful shift in behavior.

“The study doesn’t provide confidence intervals to determine whether the differences are actually significant,” she wrote in an email to The Washington Post. “The narrative around a decline in LGBT identity among youth has been around for a while now. We’ll continue to look at trends over time in our work, but the evidence provided so far for a decline leaves more questions than answers.”

Twenge said she will next test a variety of hypotheses, related to the pandemic, politics and social media, to better discern what is driving the change. --Washington Post

Not seeing the connection there at all. How does cutting funding for the Dept of Education or a global charity like USAID lead to an alleged drop of American teen girls identifying as bi or lesbian?

Then there's this:

• Growth Over Time: The percentage of U.S. adults identifying as LGBTQ+ has more than doubled since 2012, when Gallup first recorded it at 3.5%.

• By Generation: Rates are highest among younger groups. Over 23% of Gen Z adults and roughly 14.2% of Millennials identify as LGBTQ+, compared to less than 3% to 4% of older generations.

• Breakdown by Identity: Bisexual individuals make up the largest share of the LGBTQ+ population (roughly 5.2% to 5.3% of all U.S. adults), followed by gay (1.6%–2.0%), lesbian (1.4%), and transgender (1.1%–1.3%) adults.

• Demographics: Women identify as LGBTQ+ at higher rates (10.5%) than men (5.6%), and identification is higher among adults under 30 (23%), Democrats (14.2%), and city residents (10.9%) compared to Republicans (1.9%) and rural residents (7.0%).

• Driving Factors: Researchers attribute the rise primarily to changing social norms, greater visibility, and a higher willingness among younger generations—particularly young women—to identify as bisexual or fluid"
Just illustrates how much of this is social contagion.
Ninth grade girls are tremendously influenced by social pressure and by what they perceive as trendy among their peers. We see it with their taste in pop music and inevitably we saw it with "gender" identity as well. So the rates in this particular demographic cohort rocketed up when "gender" identity was getting so much attention in the media, from government, and from their own school teachers.

Teenagers love to imagine themselves as rebels, while actually behaving as if they are herd animals. Just look at how they dress and the music they all listen to. So it's easy to see how non-conforming "gender" identity played into that conventional/rebellious dynamic.

But at some point the bubble broke and it stopped being as exciting, daring and trendy. When that happened the numbers started to plummet.
The luxury of youth is to always seek out and enact their own new forms of countercultural rebellion against the System. Being sexually fluid is only one ongoing theme in that nonconformity. Others include drugs, vaping, atheism, alternative spiritualities like paganism or the occult, rock music, bohemianism, Nietzsche, Marxism, veganism, anti-corporatism, subversive literature/poetry, etc. The earliest historical example of this "rage against the machine" among youth was in 1946 Paris:

"In the heady, pre-revolutionary atmosphere of Paris in 1846 a group of particularly committed young students at the Sorbonne formed the Suicide Club, each member pledging to defy bourgeois morality through the ultimate act of rebellion... self destruction. As events turned out, only one of the student- bohemians actually did the deed. The club's formation, however, had significance beyond its failure to put its credo into practice. John Gillis has suggested that the young bohemianism of the Suicide Club was one of the earliest expressions (within Western European society at least) of a self-consciously defined youth rebellion against the adult world."--- https://search.informit.org/doi/abs/10.3...nload=true
