Who would have ever believed that there could be an RE film that the critics would love? And a complete reboot. Raccoon City and Umbrella Corp, but no Milla Jovovich. The protagonist here is a kind of comedic antihero. If the studio and Cregger decide to go with future installments due to this movie's success, then a new run will apparently lack a character with longevity. And alternatively if Cregger is not managing it, then the sequel would probably be a dud.

The "zombies" aren't so much that as Lovecraftian menaces. Of course, they started mutating later on in the original franchise, too, but not quite like this.

It's quirky as a reboot. At one point you have some characters that pop up that are very much like what you'd expect from the franchise.

As you've mentioned that main problem however is longevity. While there are a myriad of ways to rebuild a story for sequels from the "End!?!", I'd guess it was really meant as a one off aimed at being a stand alone.

Judging from the trailer, I think that I might like it. The protagonist is more of an everyman than Milla Jovovich was, hence more relatable.
