Well, we all know that snide and snarky put-downs are all part of the skeptic's MO whenever they lack any reason or evidence to doubt someone's firsthand account of something extraordinary. Attack the messenger as usual.
And some people never realize that the snark is a response to their own vile reaction to simple, impersonal doubt.
It wasn't a response to anything. It was an unprovoked attack on someone's reputation simply because he doesn't believe what he says.
Oh, I wasn't talking about him.
I've always liked Shermer's
Skeptic magazine more than CSICOP's
Skeptical Inquirer.
Skeptic has always seemed less doctrinaire and less prone to evangelical scientism. It's actually willing to be...skeptical... about some of the "skeptical" movement's more sacred cows. That makes it both intellectually valuable and often entertaining, in sometimes unexpected ways.
I have to admit that I'm skeptical (in the everyday sense of doubtful) about what David Grush claims. (That the US has crashed flying saucers in its possession and perhaps dead aliens on ice.) So in that sense, I guess that I kind of agree with Shermer. But Shermer certainly overstated his doubt in his insulting (and now deleted) X posts. They were just rude, so it's good that he apologized for them. He doesn't need to change his opinion about Grush's claims until there is persuasive reason for him to do so, but he shouldn't be an asshole, and I hope he realizes that.
I have no objection to Avi Loeb (who I respect) recruiting Shermer for his UAP Science Advisory Council. Shermer should help keep it from becoming an echo-chamber populated entirely by UFO/UAP enthusiasts. Shermer is there to say 'Woah, slow down!' before the others jump to conclusions and rush off cliffs.
