Certainly he can be wry if the script bothers to facilitate that... It's just a question of whether Garner's Okie version of such is what actually made things work in the original show. Plus... That poorer and facetious or more realistic approach to a detective (in contrast to the absurd competence and elite lifestyles of Peter Gunn and Mannix) is no longer a novel development like it was in the 70s.

Caught between a rock and a hard place. Who wants to watch the same scenario re-done? But if it doesn't capture the eccentric quaintness of the original, who wants to watch that, either?

Buffy slash Angel and SEAL Team they mention. Everybody seems to have forgotten about Boreanaz's long stint on Bones.

EXCERPT: Boreanaz's rendition of The Rockford Files is described as "a contemporary update on the classic series of the same name," according to the series' official logline.

"Newly paroled after doing time for a crime he didn't commit, James Rockford returns to his life as a private investigator using his charm and wit to solve cases around Los Angeles," the synopsis reads. "It doesn’t take long for his quest for legitimacy to land him squarely in the crosshairs of both local police and organized crime."
Yeah, I best know Boreanaz from Bones. He did have a little humor in that show... which might translate well to Rockford.
Garner is some big shoes to fill though. I'm interested to find out who will play the other roles... Rocky, Angel, Dennis.
