Overly familiar formula going back to "Rolling Thunder" days (even sports a vet). But the depth of the characterizations and the realistic pacing lift it above average. A lot quieter and more portrait oriented than what it looks like in the trailer.
One gets the sense that the audience purely gave it a C+ because they anticipated more violence, gunfire (actually little) -- and no car chases slash explosions at all. Did they expect a bevy of that with Bale, Harrelson, Dafoe, Whitaker, etc in the cast? It really wasn't a waste of the talent. This round, some of the critics who did put OotF in their top ten list of 2013 got closer to rating this right than the spectators responsible for a box office failure.
