Medvedev threatens retaliation against UK for seizing frozen Russian assets

Dmitry Medvedev, deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council, said on Thursday that Russia could retaliate against the UK for its use of frozen Russian assets to support Ukraine’s war effort, by seizing British assets in Russia and Ukraine.
Medvedev – who is close to Russian President Vladimir Putin – also lambasted UK Foreign Minister David Lammy, calling him “the English idiot.”
UK Defence Minister John Healey announced during a visit to Kyiv on Wednesday that Britain has paid for more than £1 billion of military support for Ukraine using “immobilized” Russian assets.
Medvedev wrongly said that it was Lammy who had made the announcement.
“British thieves transferred Russian money to neo-Nazis. Consequences? Britain committed an offense,” Medvedev wrote on Telegram.
“Given that this money cannot be collected through the courts for obvious reasons, our country has only one way to return the valuables. To return what was seized in kind. That is, ‘Ukrainian land’ and other real estate and movable property located on it.”
According to The Independent, the UK has frozen over £25 billion of Russian assets since the full-scale war began. Medvedev meanwhile has expressed increasingly extreme views to his audience of 1.82 million Telegram subscribers.
In June, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty’s Sistema project published an investigation suggesting that his reinvention as a pro-Kremlin political firebrand may have significantly benefitted both his finances and his political career.
