Full Version: Large Earthquake Devastates Mandalay

It was a large magnitude 7.7 quake in an area where building construction isn't very earthquake resistant. The city of Mandalay is devastated. (Burma/Myanmar's second largest city, about 1.2 million population.) The US Geological Survey estimates the number of dead at 10,000-100,000. Thousands are believed trapped under rubble.

The quake was felt over a very wide area. In Bangkok Thailand, hundreds of miles away, a tall highrise building under construction collapsed in a scene reminiscent of 9-11. 43 construction workers are missing and presumed dead.

The government of Burma/Myanmar has called out for aid from everyone. The US Geological Survey estimates that total damages might exceed the country's GDP.

Both President Trump and Secretary of State Rubio say that they have spoken with the governments impacted and US teams have been dispatched to help.
