VIDEO INTRO: All right. I didn’t want to do this video, but too many people on both sides of the border have asked, so what would a merger of the United States and Canada look like? All right. Let’s start with the simple thing. The United States is not going to invade Canada. There is no serious talk by Trump. He hasn’t even really joked about it.

So let’s just put that to the side. Canada has just shy of 40 million people. So if it was to join in a single piece, it would be right up with California as our first or second most populous States. But it has a demographic picture that’s kind of a mix. And so what would be far more likely to happen?

Because the idea that a majority of Canadians are going to petition for U.S. membership is a stretch. What'll be far more likely to happen, is individual provinces of Canada would secede from the Canadian nation, and then apply for statehood for the United States.

The first two states to watch are the two that are youngest demographically, that are the richest in per capita terms, that export the most commodities per capita, and are already fairly culturally linked in with the United States. And those are Alberta and Saskatchewan...

Will the US and Canada actually merge?

Many years ago my mother said to me (she was alive at the time) .. "I'd love to be an American.". Bit of a conversation stopper. If she'd said "I'd love to have a lobotomy." .. you might kind of get where I'm coming from. I appreciate y'all fine and you do what you do .. but .. actually wanting it !!!!

A merger of the US and Canada does make a lot of sense. (A lot more sense than the European Union.) Intertwined economies and tremendous linguistic and cultural similarities (Quebec excepted). It would make sense in defense terms too.

So, will the US and Canada merge? Exceedingly unlikely in my opinion. I don't get the feeling that most Canadians want it. Nor am I sure that most Americans would either, if they thought about it. (Do we really want all those Canadians voting in our elections?)

I'm content to honor their peculiar independence, provided that they continue to supply us with superior hockey players that we can't breed ourselves.

If I was Canadian and even considering it, the following is the only way it would work:

• Canada doesn't join America as a state, America joins Canada as a province.
  
• There would be a renaming of the overall to "The United States of Canada".
  
• A new election would have to take place for the "The United States of Canada" president, so Trump would be out.
  
• Mexico would have the asked if they'd like to join too, because being the hypothetical Canadian making the rules like that... "I'm being nice".
  
• Ice hockey will be come the national sport.

Smart woman. No other country has the freedom and prosperity that America has. But... most Brits do seem fairly masochistic. Your mum must have been a bright spot in any room.

Exactly. We don't want more California-like voters.

I doubt you vote like most California voters (at least the high-populace areas that control your state).
