I once had a waking fantasy/dream about Babylon. The Hanging Gardens. The Tower. The sacred maidens. A vast river-fed pond in the center where people swam and boated around. It was a highly romanticized version based roughly on descriptions by the Greek historian Herodotus. Maybe I lived there in a previous life. Maybe I'm living there now in a parallel life. This is something like what I imagined to be like:

Otherkin and their species dysphoria are going to be physically instantiated someday. Not just remain demoted to spiritual identities that these individuals entertain about themselves. Much of what John Varley dreamed up in regard to human modification and "beyond human" engineering is going to happen (in general, not the actual specifics of his literature). The transhumans and posthumans of the future will make the controversy over transwomen seem retrospectively amusing and tame.
