Though it's a familiar [tired] trope in the general sense, it's hopeless making the specifics of this one add-up without knowing what the original scenario was. Compare to Primer, where the simpler iteration allows somebody to draw up a diagram. No one has accomplished that with this.

The critics salvage the film by asserting that it's really about the family alchemy of the siblings, with the rest just a token background for playing that out on. So coherence existing up close doesn't matter -- only that from a distance the details of "what's going on" become fuzzy enough to slot into that broad category or theme (The Endless, Resolution, Synchronic, Looper, etc) without worry about loose ends and how the tangled maze ever got started.
