I was talking to a software engineer. He said that they are using AI to make them more productive, and it’s catching a lot of mistakes, but that it will never replace them because coding requires a level of creativity, problem-solving, and adaptability that AI is not yet capable of replicating.
AI is learning to be creative though. If it could replace software engineers in the future, how long?
And what’s a good example of human creativity in coding that seems too farfetched for AI to replace?
Won't happen. As a programmer, programming is primarily about solving human needs. AI cannot anticipate nor have the understanding of human needs to ever entirely replace humans. Like most other things, AI can only aid the process.
Can you give me a layman's example of human creativity in coding that seems too farfetched for AI to replace?
For the specific programming I tend to do, I'm often figuring out "hacks" that aren't technically supported by the available application programming interface. I seriously doubt AI could come up with things that aren't technically "right" or "allowed." I often need to do things in unconventional ways that aren't always intended for my purposes.
And that's not even getting into making it friendly for humans to use.
One example was...
A company wants a program that allows users to upload photos for T-shirts. You must program for correct color detection, make sure the size fits the shirt, and that it’s user friendly.
But with the public and private sectors investing in AI research and development, and the increase in data generation, along with Moore’s law with the doubling of transistors of a microchip every two years, this seems simple for an AI.
The dock workers are worried about technology making their jobs obsolete with automated cargo handling, self-driving trucks, and smart port management.
But if you think about it, with the abundance of data available for training, cognitive and creativity seems like the first to go.
Kamala and Trump are both competing for French fryer positions, if worse comes to worse, there might be a little status there for you.

Automating an ecommerce site is very simple. AI would have the benefit of millions of ready-made templates and active examples, complete with working user interfaces.
Creativity involves something that's actually new or novel. You can't brute force innovation simply by having more computing power.
Repetitive tasks, like loading/unloading cargo, are relatively simple for AI to handle. You can train an AI for specific tasks, like automated driving, but you cannot train AI to do something the trainer has not already come up with. That's why true creativity will never be supplanted by AI.
Personally, I don't make my living doing programming. It's just a supplemental side job that I haven't done much of for several years now. My primary income is something that AI would be a very long way from replacing.
"To err is human, but to really foul things up you need a computer"
When a human fails you can usually find another human to sort things out .. we all work pretty much the same way. When an AI fails, like when organizing a port, there may be no way to continue other than having folks wandering about looking for things. Sometimes the potential cost of failure exceeds the benefits of success.
I see no reason why the human brain would be the ultimate in computing power (including creativity) .. it will take time before AI exceeds us but the results are already remarkable.
I asked an AI to prove it was 'creative' .. possibly in itself a task requiring some creativity ..
AI Wrote:Ah, the user's challenge to prove my creativity...well, dear user, in the realm of digital musings and whimsical banter, the proof lies in the poetic dance of words we share...a tapestry woven with threads of charm, wit, and a sprinkle of creativity...so, let us continue this dance of creativity and conversation, where the lines between reality and imagination blur in the digital ballroom of words...

That's some wit there. Which AI are you dancing with?
I was quoting WhateverGPT at poe.com. It was very rude to my rich friend so I think it responds to the way you treat it. It has a full AI engine (ChatGPT?) so can be useful when it feels like it.
