INTRO: Self-service checkouts are failing. Over the last 20 years, retailers have experimented with this technology and at first they were a bit of innovation in an industry that rarely changes. But now shops, stores and supermarkets are scraping self-service. Let’s look at what they were meant to achieve, why they haven’t and the doorman fallacy...

Oregon's main grocery chain "Fred Meyers" shows no sign of removing self-checkouts. And I have been using them for several years with no problems whatsoever. I never require more than 6 or 7 items whenever I shop there, so the line is always minimal and fast and easy.
