After 10 years, tremendous secrecy and several billion dollars spent, Apple announced today in an internal company e-mail that they are ending their autonomous self-driving car project, known inside the company as 'Titan'. Apple said that in the future they want the money that they would have spent on the car spent on generative AI instead. The car had approaching 2,000 people working on it, and presumably most of them will be laid off.

Interestingly, while every Silicon Valley street is filled with Teslas (they are everywhere) nobody I know has ever seen an Apple car. I certainly haven't. It isn't clear that they ever manufactured any.

Here's a thread from 2015 discussing what was then a new project.

And here's a report about the project's demise from Bloomberg.
