Sheffield murder inquiry: Man killed when car hit crowd was 'Good Samaritan who stepped in to help stranger'

INTRO: A father-of-two who died after a car ploughed into a crowd of people during a disturbance was a Good Samaritan who was trying to help a stranger, police have said. South Yorkshire Police named the 46-year-old man who died in the incident in College Close, in the Burngreave area of Sheffield, as Christian Marriott.
The force said Mr Marriott, who was known as Chris, was out for a post-Christmas walk with his wife and two young sons, aged eight and six, when he saw a woman lying unconscious in the street just after 2pm on Wednesday.
It is believed the woman had been involved in an altercation and several other people suffered injuries during the incident, including an off-duty midwife who had also stopped to help.
The woman Mr Marriott was helping remains in hospital in a life-threatening condition. The off-duty midwife suffered minor injuries. Another man suffered serious injuries which are not believed to be life-threatening and four further people - three women and a man - all suffered minor injuries.
A 23-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder and a 55-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. Both remained in custody on Thursday night... (MORE - details)

INTRO: A mother accused of killing her four-year-old son in a knife attack has broken down in tears in court. Keziah Macharia, 41, is accused of murdering Kobi Macharia Dooly after he was found with multiple cuts in his cot.
On Thursday she appeared via video link from HMP Bronzefield women’s prison for a preliminary hearing at London’s Old Bailey. Friends and family of the boy attended the court hearing.
Judge Lynn Tayton set a timetable for the case with a plea and trial preparation hearing on 21 March. A trial before a High Court judge was provisionally scheduled to go on for up to 10 days from 4 November next year.
Ms Macharia, dressed in a grey sweatshirt, spoke only to confirm her name and date of birth then sobbed throughout the rest of the hearing as prosecutor Louise Oakley outlined details of the case.
On the evening of 20 December, police had been alerted to concerns for Kobi’s welfare by his father, Ben Dooly, who had split up with the defendant about a year before.
Within minutes of the 999 call, officers forced their way into the defendant’s home in Hackney, east London, at 10.59pm.
They found Kobi lying in his cot with a number of sharp force injuries. He was taken to the Royal London Hospital where he died at 16 minutes past midnight on 21 December.
Ms Macharia was arrested at the address and charged with murder on 22 December. While a cause of death has yet to be confirmed, it is believed Kobi died from sharp force injuries, including one to the front of the neck and another to the upper left chest... (MORE - details)

INTRO: A 16-year-old boy will appear in court charged with the murder of a 22-year-old woman in south London on Christmas Eve.
Kacey Clarke was found with a stab injury in a residential property at Spenlow House in Jamaica Road, Bermondsey, just after 10pm on Sunday December 24, the Metropolitan Police said. She died at the scene.
The 16-year-old boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was arrested a short time later and taken into custody at a south London police station. He is due to appear at Croydon Magistrates’ Court on Thursday.
Ms Clarke and the teenager were known to each other, police said.
Chief Superintendent Seb Adjei-Addoh, local policing commander for Southwark, said: “This is a tragic incident and my thoughts are with the woman’s family and friends at this incredibly difficult time.”
